MIT to Become Hotbed of AI Video Surveillance

MIT is investing over $3 million in a large-scale AI video surveillance system, comprising more than 500 cameras to be installed in various locations across the campus. The installation process began in November 2025 and is expected to continue until September 2026. The new cameras will be equipped with advanced capabilities, including real-time face and object classification. They will be able to detect various events such as motion, loitering, and crowds, as well as identify face masks and camera tampering. The cameras will also be supported by new wiring and infrastructure. The system's technical specifications suggest a high level of surveillance capability.
