Why AI Needs a “Genie Coefficient”

A new metric, referred to as the Genie coefficient, has been proposed to measure the alignment between what a user asks an AI to do and the user's intended outcome. Current benchmarks for AI focus on its capabilities, but not on whether it understands the user's underlying assumptions. The proposed metric aims to address the gap between a user's request and the AI's understanding of that request. This gap is often bridged by humans using general knowledge, such as understanding the implied actions when asking someone to get coffee. The Genie coefficient is intended to capture this aspect of human-AI interaction. The idea is to quantify the distance between the user's intent and the AI's actual response.
